Tauern line reopens following major modernisation worksJuly 14, 2025Rail services through Austrias Gastein Valley have resumed following the completion of major modernisation works on the Tauern line. As of today, trains are once again running on the key northsouth corridor between Salzburg and Carinthia, with both passenger and freight traffic now operating according to the regular timetable.The reopening follows an extensive overhaul of the Tauern line between SchwarzachSt. Veit and Mallnitz. The closure of theTauern Tunnelfor essential renovation works provided an opportunity for ÖBB to simultaneously upgrade key Railway infrastructure throughout the Gastein Valley. Major components including viaducts, track systems, and overhead lines were renewed across large sections of the route.Passengers in Bad Gastein, Bad Hofgastein, and Dorfgastein can now benefit from improved service and a more modern, user-friendly rail environment. The three upgraded stations have reopened alongside the restored rail line, with ongoing construction work continuing to enhance facilities further. Final completion of the station projects, including the installation of new electronic interlockings, is expected by the end of 2027.Key improvements such as step-free access, new Park Ride and Bike Ride areas, and reconfigured bus turnaround zones are scheduled for delivery ahead of the December 2025 timetable change.Boost for commuters and cross-border travelThe resumption of direct rail services has been welcomed by commuters, particularly those travelling between Salzburg and Carinthia, who will now benefit from shorter journey times and enhanced comfort. International rail links have also been restored, including direct services to and from Germany, many of which are already reporting strong bookings.The recommissioning of the Tauern line after the construction works is a significant milestone. I am proud of the outstanding achievements of our team, who have worked tirelessly to bring this project to completion. With this, we have concluded the first phase of the general renovation. Key sections of the tunnel now offer high levels of comfort and reliability. The tunnel, originally built during the imperial era, is now part of our modern infrastructure and reflects our commitment to sustainable and future-proof mobility, Judith Engel, Member of the Management Board at ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG, said.The reopening is also expected to boost leisure and cycle tourism. The popular Alpe-Adria Cycle Route, stretching from Salzburg to Grado, can now once again be supported by rail for easier access. The Tauern Auto and Bike Shuttle between Böckstein and Mallnitz resumed limited service one week ago and is now fully operational, running on an hourly schedule.Second phase of construction scheduled for 2027While the reopening marks a major milestone, ÖBB has confirmed that a second phase of modernisation is already being planned. This next stage will primarily focus on the southern portal area of the Tauern Tunnel.The works are scheduled to take place in the first half of 2027.
