First next generation metro train enters service in VancouverJuly 11, 2025SkyTrain has put into commercial service on the Vancouver Expo Line the new Mark V trainset, manufactured by Alstom in La Pocatière, Quebec, and then tested in Kingston, Ontario.This will be the first of47 five-car new trainscomprising 235 railcars in total that will bring more space, comfort, and modern design to customers across metro Vancouver. Originally purchased in December 2020, the addition of the Mark V fleet represents TransLinks largest-ever order of SkyTrain cars.Passengers will immediately recognise this next-generation Mark V trainset due to its iconic blue livery and unique five-car length, adding 25 per cent more capacity for customers than current trains.These driverless light metros are the longest and highest capacity trains on the SkyTrain network to date. Each five-car Mark V train can carry 672 passengers, a 25 increase in capacity over the current four-car Mark III trainsModern designs of the new Mark V include wider aisles with more standing room, handrails, and new leaning pads, spacious multi-use areas for bikes, luggage, strollers, wheelchairs, and other mobility devices and a mix of forward-facing and side seating for greater choice and flexibility. The trains provide enhanced safety and accessibility with visual door closure and emergency braking indicators.The Mark V trains represent a bold new chapter, with more space, improved accessibility, and cutting-edge features that will enhance every ride. These trains are designed to meet the needs of a growing region and Im excited to see them deliver a better experience for every customer, Kevin Quinn, CEO of TransLink said.SkyTrain will receive the entire train fleet by 2029 to serve both the Expo and Millennium Lines. The Mark V is built to support the incoming Broadway subway and Surrey-Langley SkyTrain projects.The delivery of the Mark V trainset arrives at a crucial time, as over the next five years, TransLink is expecting a 20 increase in ridership on the Expo Line, and a 50 rise on the Millennium Line during peak hours.
